Hi there,
I’ve just finished dermaplaning at home, and I’m a bit worried about what to do next. When can I put on makeup without causing problems?
And are there any important steps I should follow for taking care of my skin afterward?
Hi Joanne!
If your skin feels calm after at-home dermaplaning, I’d still give it some time before putting makeup on. A simple conservative rule is to wait until the next day. If your skin is still red, stinging, tender, or irritated, wait longer.
Dermaplaning removes fine facial hair and dead surface skin cells, which is why makeup can look smoother afterward. But your skin can also feel temporarily more sensitive, so I wouldn’t rush to cover it right away.
What I do after dermaplaning
I’ve been dermaplaning at home for a while, and my skin usually handles it well. Even so, I keep my routine very simple afterward.
- Use a gentle moisturizer.
- Wear sunscreen during the day.
- Avoid scrubs, peels, retinoids, and strong acids until your skin feels normal again.
- Skip makeup if your skin feels hot, irritated, or tender.
When is it okay to wear makeup?
If your skin feels completely comfortable, makeup the next day is usually the safer choice. If you do apply makeup sooner, use clean brushes or applicators and keep the products simple and non-irritating.
If your skin is still red or uncomfortable, don’t force it. Give it more time.
Signs your skin needs more recovery time
- persistent redness
- burning or stinging
- tenderness
- visible irritation or small nicks
If any of those are present, I’d keep the routine very basic and wait on makeup until the skin settles.

Note: If you have active acne, open skin, a rash, or another skin condition in the area, check with a dermatologist before dermaplaning.
Hope this helps!
Best,
Linda
