For most mature under-eyes, the best order to try first is a small amount of concealer only where you need coverage, let it settle, then apply the instant eye tightener mainly over the puffy area. Keeping the two products from overlapping too much often reduces cracking, pilling, and white residue.

Start with the least frustrating order
If you’ve ever tried combining concealer and an instant eye tightener, you’ve probably realized that they don’t always play nicely together.
The problem is that they’re designed to do two completely different things.
Concealer is designed to add coverage and instant eye tightening serums are designed to form a thin tightening film on the skin.
The more those products overlap, the greater the chance of cracking, pilling, flaking, or a chalky-looking finish.
That’s why my favorite starting point is simple:
- Apply a small amount of concealer only where you truly need coverage.
- Let it dry for several minutes.
- Then apply the eye tightener only where the puffiness sits.
- Keep the two products from sitting on top of each other as much as you can.
For many of us, the darkness shows up more near the inner corner or tear trough, while the puffiness sits a little farther out under the eye. That’s one reason I don’t automatically apply both products across my entire under-eye area. If your darkness and puffiness occur in different spots, you may get a smoother finish by treating them separately.
Do concealer and eye tighteners need to overlap at all?
Many women automatically apply concealer across the entire under-eye area and then apply an instant eye tightener over the same space.
But in my experience, that’s not always necessary.
For many of us, darkness is concentrated closer to the inner corner and tear trough area, while puffiness sits farther out under the eye.
If that’s true for you, try treating them as two separate problems.
Use concealer mainly where you see discoloration. Then apply the eye tightener mainly where the puffiness sits.
The less these products compete for the same space, the easier it often is to get a smoother finish.
How the common layering orders compare
There are three main ways women usually try to combine concealer with an instant eye tightener. I don’t think they all behave the same, especially on mature under-eyes, so here’s the simple way I’d look at each one.

This is usually the most forgiving approach.
The concealer has time to settle before the tightening product is applied, reducing the amount of rubbing and blending needed afterward.
Eye tightener first, then concealer
Some people prefer this method because the tightening film forms on clean skin.
The challenge is that applying concealer afterward can disturb the film and reduce the tightening effect.
Mixing them together
This produced the worst result in my own testing.
When I mixed concealer directly with Peter Thomas Roth Instant FIRMx, the finish became thicker, emphasized texture, and eventually developed visible flaking.
In my test, mixing concealer with Peter Thomas Roth Instant FIRMx looked heavier and flakier. Keeping concealer mostly where I needed coverage gave me a smoother finish.For me, this was the least successful option.
What if the recommended order still doesn’t work?
If you’ve tried concealer first, let it settle, and then applied your instant eye tightener, but the result still looks bad, don’t assume you’re doing something wrong.
Sometimes the issue isn’t the application order. It’s the combination of products.
Different concealers use different ingredients, and instant eye tighteners form different types of tightening films. Some combinations simply work better together than others.
Before giving up, try this simple compatibility test.
The 3-step compatibility test
Step 1: Try the instant eye tightener by itself. If it tightens and dries smoothly, the product is probably working as intended.
Step 2: Try your concealer by itself. Make sure you’re happy with how it looks and wears under your eyes.
Step 3: Try them together using the default method on this page. Apply a small amount of concealer only where you need coverage, let it settle, and then apply the eye tightener mainly where the puffiness sits.
If both products work well on their own but not together, you’ve likely identified a compatibility issue rather than an application mistake.
Signs the products may not be compatible
Here’s the quick clue I look for: does the combination look worse than either product looked on its own? If yes, the products may be fighting each other instead of layering smoothly.
- Looks smooth at first but breaks down quickly
- Products seem to disturb each other while drying
- Finish looks worse than either product alone
- Under-eye area looks heavier instead of smoother
How to make the pairing look better on mature under-eyes
Once you find a layering order that works reasonably well, a few small adjustments can make the finish look smoother.
When concealer and instant eye tighteners don’t look right together, the solution usually isn’t adding more product. It’s often using less.
Use less product than you think you need
Most instant eye tighteners work best in a very thin layer. The same is often true of concealer.
If either product starts looking thick, heavy, or obvious, try cutting the amount in half and see what happens.
Keep overlap to a minimum
This was one of the biggest lessons from my own testing.

Avoid chasing perfect coverage
It can be tempting to keep adding concealer when darkness shows through.
The problem is that extra layers often draw more attention to texture, puffiness, and fine lines.
A slightly imperfect but smooth finish usually looks better than heavy coverage that emphasizes every detail underneath.
Let products settle before moving to the next step
I usually let the concealer dry down a few minutes before I add the eye tightener.
It does not have to be a long wait, maybe 5 minutes or so, but I’ve learned not to rush this step. When I go too fast, the products are more likely to smear, lift, or fight with each other before either one has had a chance to set.
When to switch from the default order
The concealer-first method is where I’d start, but it won’t be the best choice for everyone.
If darkness bothers you more than puffiness
You may prefer to focus on concealer and use very little eye tightener, or skip the tightener altogether on days when coverage is your main goal.
If puffiness bothers you more than darkness
You may find that the eye tightener does enough on its own that you only need a tiny amount of concealer, if any.
If the products simply refuse to cooperate
Sometimes the problem isn’t the application order. It’s the product combination itself.
If you’ve tried different amounts, different placement, and the compatibility test on this page, but the finish still looks worse when the products are combined, it may be time to stop forcing the pairing.
