Should I buy glycolic acid to exfoliate my face? I’ve tried a lot of natural home remedies, but I never really see much difference.
There are so many exfoliating scrubs, creams, and acids to choose from. I just want something that will work and make my skin look and feel softer.
Thanks,
G.B.

Hi G.B.,
I understand why this gets confusing. There are physical scrubs, glycolic acid, lactic acid, enzyme exfoliators, and plenty of products that combine several ingredients.
For mature skin, I prefer to think in terms of gentle exfoliation rather than trying to use the strongest product possible.
Glycolic acid can be a good option because it helps loosen and remove dead surface skin cells. That can make the skin look smoother and feel softer over time.
But stronger isn’t always better. If your skin is sensitive, dry, or easily irritated, a lower-strength acid or a gentler exfoliating method may be a better place to start.
I would also avoid using a harsh scrub at the same time as a strong acid treatment. Too much exfoliation at once can leave the skin irritated instead of smoother.
If you’re not sure which type of exfoliation is best for mature skin, I explain the gentler options here:
What is gentle exfoliation? Best methods for skin over 40
If you’re specifically interested in glycolic and lactic acid and whether they can be used together, I cover that separately here:
Can you use glycolic and lactic acid together?
My suggestion is to start with one exfoliating method, use it consistently, and see how your skin responds before adding anything stronger.
Hope this helps!
Best,
Linda
